Christian Smorra: Transporting antimatter
Antimatter is an intriguing substance, challenging to produce and maintain in our world of matter. The Antimatter Factory of CERN provides the unique opportunity to produce antiprotons in an accelerator, slow them down, and inject them into ion traps, where they can be stored, investigated, and e.g. used for synthesis of antihydrogen atoms. Antiprotons are stable against decay, therefore they provide a unique opportunity to extend precision measurement methods used in AMO physics on matter also to antiparticles or synthesised antimatter systems. This enables us to conduct precision frontier tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and investigate if matter and antimatter is symmetric, and test e.g. for violation of CPT invariance or tiny shifts in the level structure resulting from new interactions.
Dr. Christian Smorra will present results of the precision comparisons of protons and antiprotons of the BASE collaboration, and limitations related to the magnetic field noise in the Antimatter Factory that ultimately led to the development of the first transportable antiproton trap. He will further cover the development of the transportable trap, and the test results that we conducted so far regarding antiproton transport, and perspectives towards reaching the ultimate precision in matter antimatter comparisons in offline high-precision laboratories.
